Chapter 1444: Where Is He?
The assistant heard this and immediately shook his head like a rattle: "Mr. Xu, you must be joking. If even a big CEO like you can eat this, I’m just an assistant, there’s nothing I can’t eat. You shouldn’t joke with me, Mr. Xu. You can eat whatever you like, and I’ll eat the same, it doesn’t matter. I can always eat something good later on."
As soon as Xu Ke leaves, he plans to order a whole round of hotpot and barbecue to enjoy properly; today’s casserole is just too bland.
Unfortunately, Xu Ke has noticed that this assistant certainly doesn’t like eating this, and also doesn’t like him, so he might as well tease the assistant a bit for fun. It’s one of life’s little pleasures.
"I advise you to eat what you want today, because probably there may be no tomorrow for you. In the future, you might still have to eat casseroles with me. Thinking about your fate, I genuinely feel sorry for you, but there’s no other way. Who told you to follow me? If you weren’t following me, you might still be able to eat something else."
Xu Ke’s words made the assistant even more nervous, as he stared at Xu Ke with wide eyes, afraid that Xu Ke might vanish in front of him.
After Xu Ke had finished eating, the assistant then gazed at the casserole.
"Mr. Xu, I’m just a low-level employee, can you let me at least have a meal? Don’t run off. Even if you run, it won’t help. I really can’t explain it to the chairman; I’m begging you, please?"
At this moment, Xiao Zhen’s assistant was already on the verge of tears, wondering why this difficult task had to be given to him. Couldn’t it have been assigned to someone else? Now he couldn’t eat, sleep, slack off, or even have a proper meal.
In the afternoon, he must speak with the chairman. He stuffed a few bites of food into his mouth and, seeing Xu Ke playing on his phone, slowly and leisurely finished a casserole.
Seeing that Xu Ke had been in the restroom for so long, Xiao Zhen immediately became worried and quickly called the assistant.
Upon hearing the assistant’s complaints, Xiao Zhen didn’t sympathize at all; he even thought the assistant was trying to shirk his duties.
"Isn’t it just that you need to keep an eye on someone? What’s so hard about that? If you really find it difficult, you can swap with the company’s cleaning staff. I’m sure they would be delighted to trade jobs with you."
Hearing this, Xiao Zhen’s assistant immediately gave up.
He quickly put on a smiling face: "Chairman, I think you’re incredibly wise and brilliant. This job is perfect for me. I have no complaints at all now; I’ll just do my job well and hope you’re satisfied. If there’s anything you’re unhappy with, please feel free to let me know."
Although keeping an eye on Xu Ke is hard, doing the cleaning would be indeed difficult as well, considering each floor has a cleaner, and everything must be kept spotless at all times.
After he ended the call and looked up, he realized Xu Ke was gone, and he suddenly panicked.
"Ah, where is he?"
The assistant, flustered, accidentally bumped into the R&D Department Director, who frowned but then somewhat relaxed his expression upon seeing it was Xiao Zhen’s assistant, trying at least to give the assistant some face.
"Oh, Director of R&D, have you seen the branch’s CEO, Xu Ke? Where did he go? I lost track of him while eating. If the chairman finds out I lost him, he’s surely going to fire me."
Seeing Xiao Zhen’s assistant so anxious, the R&D Department Director sneered. That Xu Ke insisted on causing trouble at headquarters; he was the least welcome.
And the R&D Department Director had heard that after Xiao Zhen’s assistant started following Xu Ke, he was coming to discuss with him how to deal with Xu Ke, but he couldn’t believe Xiao Zhen’s assistant treated that person like royalty.
This annoyed the R&D Department Director, thinking the assistant must be just as annoyed, wanting to discuss things with him, but seeing the assistant still going all out for Xu Ke, he was filled with disdain.
"I say, you’re at least the chairman’s assistant, you don’t have to be so submissive to one person, do you? And aren’t you supposed to be doing the task the chairman assigned to you? What are you doing here?"
The R&D Department Director said this, and the assistant, troubled with no one to vent to, felt as if he’d found a pillar of support upon seeing him.
He immediately unloaded his grievances onto the R&D Department Director: "Director of R&D, you have no idea. The chairman insists that I keep an eye on the branch’s CEO, saying if I don’t do a good job today, I’ll lose my job. I really have no choice; today, this task is of utmost importance. I wish I knew what the chairman is thinking, then it’d be great."
The assistant grew more and more disheartened, but upon hearing this, the R&D Department Director thought the assistant was just too rigid. Seeing this, he thought he might as well help the assistant.
"Listen to me, you must not be so rigidly led by the nose. So let me suggest a way, don’t blame me then."
Upon hearing what the R&D Department Director said, the assistant refused outright, shaking his head: "You better not suggest anything. It’s just today; after today, he’s sure to leave. So, it’s more important to keep my job first."
Seeing the assistant ignoring his advice and about to leave, the R&D Department Director blocked his way.
"Just now, when I came over, the chairman needed to see you. You should go to him. Besides, at any rate, that branch CEO also works under the Xiao Group; surely, he won’t go far. He needs to make money, why can’t you see that? Letting him lead you by the nose, you’re so spineless."
The assistant heard that the chairman called for him, so he knitted his brow. That shouldn’t be, the chairman didn’t say so before, and wasn’t keeping an eye on Xu Ke the most important task for today?
However, seeing a chance to break away from this task, the assistant left directly, even feeling particularly grateful to the R&D Department Director.
"Really, thank you. Thanks to you, I can escape from this demon, and this demon is truly tormenting. You’re so kind to help."
The R&D Department Director shook his head, feeling that the assistant’s mind wasn’t very sharp. Now it seemed easy to trick him, and as long as he didn’t admit anything, the chairman wouldn’t do anything to him.
As for this assistant, even if he lost his job, it wouldn’t matter; after all, the R&D Department Director had a relative who wanted this position beside the chairman anyway, at least someone who could say nice things for him.
Watching the assistant’s departing figure, the R&D Department Director chuckled coldly.
